“Desert City”

It took me a while to get back to these images and try and edit them. Black and white seems quite appropriate…

It was May 2020. We were getting out of hard lockdown. It was the first time that we could venture downtown. It felt so strange.

There was hardly anyone around.

Seeing Milan so empty was… dreadful. I can’t think of another word, honestly. We live in a city that never sleeps – it’s a cliché, I know, but it’s true. There is always noise and bustle and people hurrying up and down the streets, cars honking, trams passing by full of people going places…

But not that day.

Very few cars were around and trams were empty. Everything was silent and still. Even the few people we encountered didn’t seem like they were talking at all.

These pictures are testament to those times, and I hold high hopes that it won’t happen again.
