Places Over Categories

One thing that I’ve always struggled at is categorizing photos and assigning a specific genre to them.

Of course, many of them are easily grouped and while I think of myself as a street and landscape photographer, in reality the boundaries between genres and categories are very blurred.

The image above is a perfect example. I called it A City of Two Tales and I captured it in Paris a few years ago. If you think about it, what genre would it fit into?

Hard to tell.

As I progress through my photography journey, I find that I capture more and more images that would easily fit into multiple genres – and that is perfectly fine.

For that reason – and to embrace such an “organic” approach – I reorganized the galleries on my website favoring places instead of categories. I think this works better for me as well as for visitors, which are probably more interested in exploring places they have visited or they want to visit.

I will shuffle things around a bit more over the coming weeks to optimize the galleries even further.

My portfolio, which is also my website’s front page, will continue to be a mix of genres and styles.
