What’s A Good Photo?

This is a good photo.

It has very few of the usual compositional elements that make a good photo:

  • A clear subject: the sky maybe?
  • A foreground and a background: no foreground at all
  • Geometric properties: there’s symmetry between the sky and the water, but that’s it.

It is still a good photo because it inspires good feelings: wonder and awe for a rare sunset over River Po.

I think feelings are a very important aspects in photography. An image might be simple – even simplistic – but it can still generate sensations, feelings, and ideas in the viewer. Anyone can relate to those and that can turn an image alive.

I have a few more pictures of the same sunset – all with very minimal editing – but I decided to add the one above in portfolio because it’s the simplest of them all.
